Half of U.S. Population Pays no Income Tax

The percentage of people who do not pay federal income taxes, and who are not claimed as dependents by someone, jumped from 14.8 percent in 1984 to 49.5 percent in 2009.”
Using data supplied by the IRS, Heritage Foundation researchers Bill Beach and Patrick Tyrell worry that the people who don’t pay taxes will continue to vote for representatives who support entitlements and subsidies.
